NSF Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR)

NSF’s Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) is a national-scale activity to enable new modes of data-driven discovery that will allow fundamental questions to be asked and answered at the frontiers of science and engineering. The HDR vision is realized through an interrelated set of activities and funding opportunities. Each of these efforts is designed to amplify the intrinsically multidisciplinary nature of the emerging field of data science.

Plasma 2020 Decadal Assessment: Call for White Papers – Extended Deadline March 8

The US National Academies Decadal Assessment of Plasma Science (nas.edu/plasma) – Plasma 2020 – has extended the deadline for white papers to March 8 owing to the government shutdown. We look forward to receiving your input. The original call for white papers follows.
The US National Academies has recently started the Decadal Assessment of Plasma Science (nas.edu/plasma) – Plasma 2020. As with the previous decadal assessment, Plasma 2010 (sites.nationalacademies.org/bpa/BPA_048210), the Plasma 2020 report will provide an overview of accomplishments in all fields of plasma science and technology during the previous decade, and provide guidance on the most critical science challenges leading to societal benefit to be addressed in the coming decade. As with Plasma 2010, we expect the Plasma 2020 report to be highly influential in establishing priorities for plasma focused agencies, both in the US and internationally. The Plasma 2020 committee invites the US and international plasma science and technology communities to submit white papers addressing past accomplishments, future science challenges, opportunities to provide societal benefit, needed interdisciplinary collaborations and means to enhance careers in the fields of plasma science and technology. The white papers will be a major source of input to the committee. Instructions for submitting white papers are at the bottom of nas.edu/plasma. Please submit white papers by [now March 8]. The goal of this first ML- Helio conference is to leverage the advancements happening in disciplines such as machine learning, deep learning, statistical analysis, system identification, and information theory, in order to address long-standing questions and enable a higher scientific return on the wealth of available heliospheric data.
We aim at bringing together a cross-disciplinary research community: physicists in solar, heliospheric, magnetospheric, and aeronomy fields as well as computer and data scientists. ML- Helio will focus on the development of data science techniques needed to tackle fundamental problems in space weather forecasting, inverse estimation of physical parameters, automatic event identification, feature detection and tracking, times series analysis of dynamical systems, combination of physics-based model with machine learning techniques, surrogate models and uncertainty quantification. The conference will consists of classic-style lectures, complemented by hands-on tutorials on Python tools and data resources available to the heliophysics machine learning community.

pfsspy: A python Package for PFSS Modelling

pfsspy, a new python package for computing Potential Field Source Solutions, has just had its first release (0.1). This package builds on code written by Anthony Yeates (github.com/antyeates1983/pfss) to provide an accessible, documented, and freely available code for calculating PFSS solutions in python.
pfsspy can be installed from PyPi using
pip install pfsspy

Summary Project for Solar-Terrestrial Environment Prediction (PSTEP; www.pstep.jp/) is a nation-wide research collaboration supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas from MEXT/Japan. PSTEP aims to contribute to building a next-generation space weather forecast system to prepare for severe space weather disasters by answering some of the fundamental questions concerning the solar-terrestrial environmental system. Successful candidates will work under a project “Solar-Terrestrial Environment Prediction as Science and Social Infrastructure” of PSTEP. The successful candidates are required (1) to mainly analyze the Arase data on radiation belts and inner magnetosphere to compare them with results from the radiation belt simulations in order to contribute understanding and predictions process on variations of the outer belt electrons, or (2) to mainly analyze ground-based GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and optical measurement data to compare them with outputs from a whole atmosphere-ionosphere coupled model, GAIA (Ground-to-topside model of Atmosphere and Ionosphere for Aeronomy) in order to contribute to prediction of the ionospheric variations.
